The new 41,000-square-foot space gave the company and its 200 employees room to breathe at last. The company was operating in a cramped 17,000-square-foot office space which had already doubled in size since 2012. “We had ended up on top of each other,” said Megan Helling, chief operating officer and chief financial officer. “To their credit, the team had a great attitude about it.”   The company’s new headquarters are “open, fresh and have a high-energy feel,” Helling said. The workstations feature sit-to-stand ergonomic desks while the collaborative spaces have comfortable furnishings with punches of color to contrast the neutral floors and walls. A large cafe offers a variety of seating including tables, booths and a banquette. Outside, a large patio encourages employees to enjoy fleeting summer days with ample seating, firepit tables and a pergola. “The patio has been very well-received,” Helling said. The office space was designed to showcase many of EMC's state-of-the-art technologies it offers its clients. There are five different controls systems throughout the office, each operating light fixtures from 24 different manufacturers. The new headquarters combines natural light, timed controls, personal control and HVAC integration to create an energy-efficient work environment. The lighting systems are designed to save money and reduce energy use by providing just the right amount of light and automatically adjust to compensate for off hours or natural light levels — such as bright sunlight streaming in from the skylights. And when new technologies are available, EMC is ready to easily update the space. Customers can also check out new and emerging technologies in the company’s new light lab.
