Drop-Off Day is an opportunity for all residents to dispose of unwanted items with the goals of
preventing illegal dumping and providing education on proper disposal of waste items and facilitating
environmental awareness. Drop Off Day is promoted in a number of ways including Facebook where we
received nearly 6,700 impressions.
The 2018 Drop-Off Day was held on April 21st from 7:30am to 12:30pm. One week earlier, a blizzard
dropped over 18” of fresh snow on the site. Crews worked diligently during the week to successfully
clear the site for the Drop-Off Day event.
The traffic flow and layout were changed from 2017 to 2018 to improve efficiency and to provide for
two lanes to unload vehicles. There was no charge to drop off paper, bicycles, batteries, bulbs, or
textiles. A fee of $20 per vehicle load was charged to drop off electronics, mattresses, metal, municipal
solid waste (MSW), construction and demolition (C&D) debris, and tires, which was the same pricing as
2017. 950 vehicles attended the event which is a 4.1% increase over 2017 and a 30.4% increase over
2016. Further, there was an 8% reduction in patrons in the free line, and an 11% increase in patrons in
the disposal/$20 pay line. On average, a vehicle exited the site every 20 seconds for 5 hours.
Staff has reviewed feedback from residents on the event. It appears that in general, the wait time in
2018 was reduced by about 30 minutes in the disposal line from 1.5-2 hours to 1-1.5 hours despite an
11% increase in disposal line patrons. The wait peaked with approximately 250 vehicles in line at one
time. There was an increase in the wait time for the free line as vehicles stacked past the point at which
patrons only using the free area were to be re-directed out of the main line.
Staff annually reviews the event and considers feedback from residents and staff while considering how
to improve the event in 2019. Feedback received during and after the event was overwhelmingly
positive. Staff did receive several comments requesting improved access and reduced wait times for
paper shredding. Consideration is always given to changing the event layout, hosting more than one
event annually, increasing the duration of the event and costs, finding an alternate location, and hosting
a drop off for free items at a separate location.
