By Alan Palazzolo OCTOBER 16, 2017 — 10:45AM The Met Council takes aerial photos of the seven-county metro area every five to seven years to determine how every inch of land is being used, aided by property assessment records. It isn’t perfect — the analysis relies on human judgment, sometimes correcting past imperfections — but cities across the region use the detailed maps and data to plan for the future. The Star Tribune compared the Met Council’s 2016 survey with its last flyover in 2010. Use the map below to find changes in your neighborhood or your favorite parts of the metro area. We'd like to hear about what you find. Please share by leaving a note in the comments below or by posting to Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms. Copy the URL from the map (while zoomed to your location) and paste it with your comments. The map below shows how land use in the Twin Cities metro area has changed from 2010 to 2016 and colored according to the general category of land use. Beware there are imperfections in the data which reflects Metropolitan Council classifications. Some parcels shown as changing uses are corrections of past data. Page 15 Note that change can reflect a change in designation by the Met Council and not necessarily an actual change in land use.
