As we approach vrir'ter there are many things that need to be done around your community. Sr ff and vendors are busy getting your home ready for winter. Gardens have b vn cleaned out, underground sprinklers have been drained, heating system huts been fried up, to name a few. Unfortunately this also means that the outdoor furniture will have to come in. I never like to see this happen because so many of you enjoy it, so I leave it out as long as I can. If you need help putting your air conditioner cover back on for winter, please let us know. With the change of season, it is very important to have any door decorations that Lou are chi; ging spayed with fire retardant. These two items need to be addressed through the work order process. There are plenty of %%,ork orders in the slot under the bulletin board by the office. I need to addm--s a problem. that came to my attention recently.. As you all know•, there is a refrigerator in the kitchen off of the diningroom. This refrigerator is used for many community functions as well as private functions. We always suggest that if you are having a function and need to put something in the refrigerator you should mark it u ith-your name on it. Even though this is a community refrigerator, no one should take things that don't belong to him or her. Last meek before pancake breakfast, butter patties (that the Resident Council buys for the breakfast) were put in the refrigerator to thaw out. Saturday morning when the committee started preparing the breakfast, the butter patties were half gone. This was vzry disappointing for the Pancake Committee who volunteer their time and energy to prepare such a marvelous breakfast for everyone. The committee n'oukl like me to remind all residents that if you didn't put something in the refrigerator then you shouldn't take anything out of it. Let's all try to live by this rule. Canada first adopted Thanksgiving as a national holiday in November 1879, and it is now celebrated annually on the second Monday in October. Turkey Lovers' One theory is that wild turkeys have been residents of Central and North America for 10 million years, and they are the only breed of poultry native to America. North Carolina leads the nation in turkey production, harvesting 61 million turkeys annually. Minnesota and Arkansas are numbers two and three respectively. Wild turkeys can tly (for a short distance) at 55 miles per hour. Domestic turkeys cannot By, Domestic turkeys have been known to drown from looking up at the sky during a heavy rain! VETERANS' DAY November 11, 2001 In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11'", as Veterans' Day, an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. Every year on Veterans' Day at 11:00 a.m. a memorial service is held at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Two minutes of silence are observed. Taps is played and the President or one of his representatives places a wreath on the tomb. DID YOU KN VllT- All new door decorations should be sprayed with fire retardant. An area of tropical rain forest about the size of four city blocks is being destroyed every minute. Burning our rain forest not only kills trees that had once absorbed large quantities of carbon dicD;de, it also releases carbon dioxide into the air adding to the green..ouse effect. There is no difference in the nutritional value between regular old fashioned and quick oatmeal. Cooks gnat in the microwave. When you return the carts downstairs, you should make sure you do not put them in front of the doors. The entire village of Hibbing, MN was moved' when it was discovered that it sat atop one of the largest beds of iron ore in the world, covering over 1,600.acres and running 535 feet deep. If you peel and freeze apples to use later, just soak them in 7-Up or Sprite and they won't tum brown. If U.S. drivers traveled in carpools of four persons each, we could reduce gasoline consumption by 45%. Marian Goodacre did all the Halloween table favors! Thank you Marian! This, from a Canadian newspaper, it's worth sharing. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television Commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: America: The Good Neighbor This Canadian thinly it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. - None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Amerim-as who propped it up, and their rewardwas to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I %oas there, l saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. No%v newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, war mongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have n plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the international lines except Russia fly American Planes? %%qiy does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and %Mu get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find inen on the moon - not once, but several titres - and safely home uaain. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgersam not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless the;• are breaking Canadian laves, are getting A merican dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down thmgb age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Now York Centralwent broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I. can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned. tired of hearing them get kicked around They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And. when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those?'
