Please consider the. following when planning for our neighborhood park: IMpCRIAL HILLS PARK COtDIENTS: 1. How do you propose to handle security in this isolated area? This has drawn groups at times making use and safety of this park questionable. 2.. More clean sand, or upgraded periodically, 3. The trees and woods along the telephone lines running north and south in the park should be trimmed and cleaned up - some cut down. 4; Safety cut weeds back, allow for safety. The park is very isolated - It's unsafe to let children go there alone.: Strangers could easily prey on our children unseen. Frankly, the place is pretty, but very frightening for a parent: j 5. Vandalism.. The isolated, setting. People can do destructive things without being seen. Mosquito control.. Include items usable by toddlers and by older kids. Consider drainage to, minimize mud after a rain. 5. Do things which would have low vandalism: Don't create a place for drugs to be sold. 7. I have seen an exercise course laid out at a park in Golden Valley. I would like to see some exercise equipment located away from the playground equipment so adults could use it. 8.. The only thing that I would prefer to see improved at Imperial Hills is the stlow removal from the park access walks, especially the walk that exits from Urban- dale. Snow has not been removedtrom this walk during the entire winter, and, entrance to the park from this source has been quite difficult at times. This has been especially true for children who use this entrance to get to the gskatn rink.: It is miraculous that some child has not been seriotisl y inured while climbing over the pile of ice and snow built up at the curb, by the snowT removal equipment. An inspection of the pa k entrance at this point will illustrate the danger referred to. Snout removal equipment is brought in regularly from the Shadyvi,ew entrance and uses the blacktop walk to the skating rink to clean it. This walk is. kept in excellent condition. Incidentally, part of the snow removed from the skating rink is piled directly on the: walk leading out to Urbandale. Could not this snow removal equipment make an occasional trip out on the walk leading, to Urbandale? 9. We rarely use the park or allow our children to use it - because its sheltered. location makes it a gathering place for people and activities less than desirable. 10., Time park will open and: close park 'attendant - water fountains maintenance. 11. Skating rink and warming house. 12. We live on Troy Lane and are concerned about the possibility of an accicent. as kids, bicycles and dogs shoot onto the road from the path through the woods. This is,, 1 believe, private property and the owners have tried unsuccessfully to block the path. What is legitimate access to the park from Troy Lane? Please advise our association. 13, Do the minimum. 14. More shade trees, 15. Keep the ice rink appropriate lighting. 16. Please consider activities and safety of pre-school and elementary age children.. They seem to be the. gvOup who uses the park the mostand, get the most enjoyment out Of it' 17. 1lpgrade basketball court - baseball diamond in southwest corner (has axl.,,s natural seating) Signs at all entrances "This: is a pooper-scooper p Signs to be installed where people come in from Troy Trane. I'No snowmobile signs as on Luce Line trail. Replace all damaged and/or 4e,stroyed trees, etc., immediately. Install park signs. at 17th Avenue, and"center entrance. Why don't we produce a, universal sign to be used in all parks, etc.7 18. We've really enjoyed the skating rink for winter activities. please continue. to maintain and keep it it until 9:40-10,00 p•m. Also, developing, a sledding _area would enhance year-round use of the purk. 19. Evening lighting. Visibility to see who is in the park area - no hiding places for drinking, etc.. 20 Walking/bike paths cleared of snow all winter. 21.. Tennis courts would be nice! 22. Do something to prevent vandalism. 23. Lots of lights and more open to surrounding area to help prevent vandalism. We don't need any :more baseball diamonds, try to divide the park into smaller areas each devoted to one activity, i.e., children's play area, soccer goals, volleyball, horseshoes. Put up signs for "absolutely no golfing" it is simply too dangerous with children playing. 24. Could consideration be given for a neighborhood standard Olympic size pool? 25. Running track around perimeter of park built in such a wav that, joggingparentcanseetheirpre-school and young elementary children playing on playground equipment 26. Routine patrol of the park. Safe, walking paths. Clean-up laws for people walking dogs and horses!' 27. Proper lighting. 28. It would be very nice to have better equipment, at the park.. 29. Please consider the following when planning for our neighborhood park: t QUEENSLAND PARK CONNEN.TS 1. it's fine as is. Spend as little as possible. 2. Car parking. 3 Litter has made it undesirable to walk from 6th Avenue to the park. Also may consider a paved path around the border of the park instead of trail which would encourage motorized vehicles 4.. More frequent visits by our police to. secure park and improve police/ children relations. 5. Please redo the basketball, area - front of rim points up and it is the wrong height - also edges are dangerous and surface rough -- improperly marked. 6_. ;Zany kids in the surrounding areas are now skateboarding. 74 Please consider dredging, of the marsh just off the trail connecting 6th Avenue to the: park -- it would be a beautiful place for ducks, etc., if not quite so overgrown. Also, please take steps to make sure that motor- cycles, cars and snowmobiles cannot use this trail.. opening the rarshes into, ponds capable of supporting ducks and other wildlife. Maintain as inuch natural habitat for nature as possible within the park. Also, clean up previous deposits of concrete and blacktop. obviously, the ,grading has included the use of fill and a dump site. 9. Put down, a base of sand rather than stones; wood chips mai* also be preferable.. 10.. Trail to Hawthorne. Ponds should be paved and one from 8th. Avenue north to Hadley Hills should be paved. Fence west side of park so that balls don't roll into swamp 11. Paved trails most important improvement for the Hawthorne Ponds area. Cleaning the trail in the winter would make it possible for us to use the ice. 12. We appreciate having the path to Hawthorne Ponds cleared. Sometimes it gets pretty ° muddy and grown over and full of mosquitoes. 13. Make it a safe, fun place for all. 14. Please consider a '"family oriented" park, which is the reason I have checked such things as picnic tables; and volleyball,, which are activities families can do together. of course, with younger children, things such_as swings and tunnel, slide would be better. There are never enough tennis courts! 15. our neighborhood has grown up together. Most of us on the two Queensland cul-de-sacs have kids in junior and senior high school. 16. Continue the Playground in the Streets programs - they're superb! More supervision and limited:d beer drinking in the, park so families can enjoy the park in the evenings, too. 17. The park is close to our house, but we still need to drive because the kids are small. Therefore, 1 think you should make a few parking spaces. 1 We have mired emotions about an increase of equipment at Queensland Park. More will possibly brim people from other areas. 'that's more cars on the dead-end street who will use our Wards, to park in front of (& on someti es) and driveways to turn around in. We don't mind that as much as the possi- bility of teenagers>mis-using the park if there are more things to vandalize. After chainin; the picnic tables to the shelter this winter, the tables are still there - Hurrah! We lore the park and the natural Look that it has. The marsh newt to it has been home for nesting geese for years. We would hate to see it disturbed. If the people using the park could have a satellite toilet, I'm sure it would. be a big help, especially for little ores. How about chaining it to a tree on the pike path? beep the marsh and natural feeling of park: 19. Paved trail would be nine, especially from 6th Avenue. A tennis bang board._ 20. it would be nice if the brush would be, cut down in swamp area: (just four feet wide) for a circular cross-country ski, trail. This trail would connect to existing paved trail. 21. Access to park from lower Queensland Lane - a bike trail of some sort would be sufficient - leading off from the cul-de-sac at 540 Queensland Lane.
