I have shared them with the City Council. The shortage of affordable housing is indeed a serious issue in Minneapolis and in Plymouth. One of the top goals of the Plymouth City Council in 2001 is: "Pursue affordable housing and life cycle housing opportunities." Plymouth has a Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and many federal and local dollars are targeted toward affordable housing. This includes Plymouth Towne Square that offers affordable rental housing to seniors, housing maintenance assistance programs, and Section 8 rental assistance program. Our City Planning staff works with each developer proposing housing in Plymouth to try to incorporate affordable housing. This is very difficult due to the cost of land, but we have had some successes. During 2001 and 2002, we are studying our local regulations, assessments, and fees to identify those which may be a barrier to affordable housing. We also believe there is a close relationship between affordable housing; employment, and transportation. I want to commend you for participating in your Housing Summit. The Plymouth City Council is in the early stages of planning a Housing Summit to involve local land owners, developers, and others in the discussion about affordable housing. Thanks again for writing. We are a large, diverse, geographically far-flung parish and we are very committed to working to increase the availability of safe, decent and affordable housing in Minneapolis and the metro area. Recently at St. Joan of Arc, we celebrated Housing Sunday. A small group of parishioners met for ten weeks as part of a "Housing Summit" facilitated by Dr. Paul Halvorson. In addition to our current charitable and advocacy efforts, we wanted to discern three actions our parish could take that would provide affordable housing solutions in our neighborhood. We then invited the congregation to complete the enclosed survey. So far, 361 people have expressed interest in being part of at least one of those three actions, and we look forward to successfully implementing all three projects. In addition, we provided some education about homelessness and affordable housing to our Religious Education instructors. They gave their students an opportunity to write to their respective mayors about this issue and invite them to respond. We hope you will take the time to read the enclosed and we invite you to respond to individuals or to St. Joan of Arc. We thank you for your leadership on this crucial issue. We wish you much success and look forward to partnering with you and other leaders to find ways to make affordable housing a reality. Peace to you, . *&(1&J 0116W Julie Madden Peace and Justice/Pastoral Ministry Coordinator F ro SJA Housing Summit: Developing A Third Way A group of twelve people committed to developing a third way for addressing affordable housing have met for ten weeks to identify what St. Joan of Arc (SJA) could do within its parish neighborhood. This effort is based on a commitment to identify practical activities SJA could do that are distinct from existing charitable first way) or advocacy (second way) approaches in responding to the shortage of affordable housing in our communities. Our intent is to engage over time in innovative, practical and short-term projects that provide affordable housing solutions within the SJA parish neighborhood. Ideally, this pioneering effort will also encourage other churches in the metropolitan area to "adopt" their respective parish neighborhoods and identify third way opportunities to expand affordable housing in their areas. As value -oriented caring institutions, churches have access to resources --money, skills, volunteers and networks --that make a difference. Each person who participated in this process is connected to housing in some way and is committed to making difference. Our members are renters, homeowners, developers, building contractors, landlords, property managers, realtors, bankers, neighborhood leaders, architects and construction workers. Today on Housing Sunday, we invite you to complete the short survey and choose your level of involvement and participation in one ofthe three projects selected to impact affordable housing in our parish neighborhood. It is noted that the storm sewer outlet for the wetland is partiality blocked with sediment and vegetation. In the past this has resulted in emergency sewer cleaning following rain events. It is our goal to remove the blockage from the storm sewer pipe that controls the elevation in the wetland. The spoils that are excavated from the site will be placed in an upland area adjacent to the wetland. Some tree removal will be necessary. They have paint marks on them for identification purposes. Access to the site is off of Vinewood Lane. While the exact date of when the work is not known, it will most likely occur sometime this winter. The trees have paint marks for identification purposes. While the exact date of when the work will be done is not known, it will most likely occur sometime this winter.
