ENDORSING PROCLAMATION OF MARCH 2 - 99 1997 AS VOLUNTEERS OF
AMERICA WEEK IN THE CITY OF PLYMOUTH
WHEREAS, the Volunteers of America is one of Mirmesota's largest
human service organizations and Plymouth residents receive services from Volunteers of
America; and
WHEREAS, the Volunteers of America have askedthat the Mayor and
City Council proclaim March 2 - 9, 1997 as Volunteers of America Week in the City of
Plymouth in recognition of the 101' Anniversary of Volunteers of America; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Tierney has signed a proclamation declaring
March 2- 9, 1997 as Volunteers of America week in the city of Plymouth and the
proclamation has been forwarded to Volunteers of America for inclusion in their
anniversary information;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Plymouth Minnesota, that the proclamation of March 2 - 9, 1997 as Volunteers of
America Week in the City of Plymouth is hereby endorsed.
Adopted by the City Council on March 5, 1997.

Whereas, the Volunteers of America. a Christian human service orl: inization, is celebrating its 101' year of service
to the people of Minnesota and the nation; it is therefore certainly approp fate for us, the City of Plymouth, to join in the
observance of this milestone with the commemoration of March 2-9, 1997 as Volunteers of America Week; and,
Whereas, the Volunteers of American is making a valuable contrisution by providing these services to adults a;d
elderly: nine homas for mentally disabled, mentally W. chemically t'epr.rdent and/or elderly adults; congregate dining for
seniors at 43 sitrs in Amh and Henfepin Counties; transitional t..asing for women and their familia in Aitkin,
Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, and Pine Counties; home delis t red meals for persons W yeas of age and over,
semi-independent living services and WTorted living services; three housing complexes for familia, the handicapped,
and the elderly; three assisted living conrm-addles; and four long-term health can facilities; and
Whereas, the Volunteers of America provides these services for children and youth: a children's daycare, programs
serving autistic, autistic -like, and/or developmentally disabled youth; children's sheliers' in-home services; 52 foster
treatment homes and correction group homes; a residential treraient center for emotionally handicapped boys; x
specialized behavioral program for boys with severe problems; short-term after care for youth with special needs; and,
Whereas, the Volunteers of America, pro%ides two cor„ctional services: a pre-release and work -release
correctional program serving men and a jail, workhouse and work -release correctional program serving women; and,
Whereas, the Volunteers of America, through its dedicatee, staff and volunteers and the many people who help
support their work through financial contribu;kins make a significant impact on the lives of people in Plymouth; and.
Whereas. the Volunteers of America Is commemorating its founding in 11196 and urges others to join them in
bridging the gap between human needs ad the restwrces of the public and private sector;
Now, therefore, be It remived, that I, Joycelyn H. Tierney, Mayor of the City of Plymouth, do hereby declare the
week of March 2-9. 1997, as
Volunteers of America week In Plymouth, Minnesota
And, he It tualved, that copies of ►bio proclamation be transmitted to the Volunteers of America as evidence of our
esteem.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Plymouth, Minnesota to be
