What are your school activities and outside interests? What awards and/or accomplishments to you want to highlight? Briefly describe the strengths of Plymouth today. Mark your preference in serving: Youth Advisory Council Human Rights Commission Why are you interested in serving on a City advisory board? I am interested in serving on a City advisory board because it seems like an excellent opportunity. Ithinkthatbeingabletobeanactivememberofmycitygovermnentasateenagerwouldbearewardingexperience. Voicing my opinions and concerns about my city as a young person while learning more about the city government is something that I would like the chance to do. I know I carr contribute, as well as learnfromthecouncil, if I am chosen. What are your school activities and outside interests? I am involved in a number of activities in and outside of school. I belong to the Symphonic Band at Wayzata as well as the Marching Band where I play the clarinet and bass clarinet. I am a chairperson on the YES (Youth Extending Services) Advisory Board at my school and a Study Buddies coordinator. YES is a program that offers a number of volunteer opportunities to students throughout the year such as trick -or -treat for cans, volunteering at school carnivals, Sharing and Caring Hands, etc. Study Buddies is a program that helps younger kids with their homework and befriends them. Wayzata High School does this with the elementary schools in our district and we also have an inner-city site. I am on my school's Speech Team arid am a member of RARE (Raising Awareness for Respect and Equality), as well. Last year I also competed in a creative -thinking competition similar to Odyssey of the Mind called Destination lrnagination. Outside of school I volunteer at the Plymouth Library, organizing the Read -To -Win program, and at Methodist Hospital as a nurses' assistant. I am also a member of the Methodist Student Council, which puts together activities, fundraisers, and plans award ceremonies for the other student volunteers. I also play the piano. What awards and/or accomplishments do you want to lugtdight? Last school year I was selected to attend the Prudential Youth Leadership Institute with 3 other freshman in my school. The Institute was a 30 -hour intensive look on what it means to be a good leader. I received the President's Student Service Award for volunteering last spring. My Destination Imagination Team placed 2' in the regional competition. I have been a Minnesota Academic All-Star- for 3 years. Briefly describe the strengths of Plymouth today. The City of Plymouth has many positive aspects. 1Zne building of lifetime, the Plymouth Library, and "Downtown Plymouth" in general has made us more commercial with many places to go for entertainment, shopping, food, etc. Plymouth is home to one of the biggest high schools in the nation, Wayzata High School, which has a very good reputation for learning. Plymouth is a nice suburb to live with a good balance of scenic landscapes and commercial areas. I think the City of Plymouth has done a wonderful job of starting programs for people of all ages to enjoy, so from a young child, to a senior citizen there are many activities that are offered in Plymouth. Briefly describe the weaknesses of Plymouth today. Plymouth has some weaknesses as well. Some young people do not feel part of the community thatisPlymouthbecausetheunfriendlinesstheymightencounteriftheygotoanypublicplacesuchasa restaurant or the movie theater. I think city officials could work with young people to try to make them feel a part of the community by offering places for them to go, socially, that they will feel welcomed. The lack of diversity in Plymouth and the ignorance that many people have are some other weaknesses. Briefly describe Plymouth as you believe it should be 10 years from now. In 10 years I would like to see Plymouth as a more close-knit community. The city could work with the schools to offer programs and activities that young people could take part in. There would be a development of more athletic leagues for girls and boys, like a Plymouth Girl's Volleyball. The parts of Plymouth with scenic wilderness would still be intact, but there would also be more commercial buildings such as restaurants, a bowling alley, or roller-skate arena There would also be an organized volunteer program where teenagers could go to senior citizen's homes and teach them how to use the Internet or read to them and adults could mentor young people. Are there any specific issues that you feel strongly about that should be discussed by the Youth AdvisoryCounciland/or the Human Rights Commission? I really do not have a large enough knowledge to know of any specific issues that should be discussed by the Youth Advisory Council or the Iluman Rights Commission. Plymouth, MN 55447 c c ,. d ' k +ms's, , _ • ' k .2 t - - 09/11/00 Gly of Plymouth Plymouth Student Application Form Why are you interested in serving on a City advisory board? I am interested in serving on a city advisory board because I believe that I really care about Plymouthand Plymouth's residents. It is also an interest of mine to help better the Plymouth community. I am also fascinated with the way :our great country's government makes decisions that effect us' all. I am not afraid of working hard and getting the job done. I believe that going the extra mile is the least that you should expect from any public official and if I was selected to serve on a city advisory board then that is exactly what I would do. What are your school activities and outside interests? I am a member of the Crystal Evangelical Free Church's youth group and I am - mi the multicultural group at school. I'm in the Service Leadership group at Armstrong and I play tennis for Armstrong. I am also member of a group that learns about other cultures called the Leland Johnson Common Vision Program and I am a member of a student educating student group called Dads Make a Difference: I am also in the Chess Club at Armstrong. i yu j g What awards and/or accomplishments do you want to highlight? An award that I won was the Robbinsdale Armstrong High School Academic Excellence award last year in my Social Studies class. And`an accomplishment that I want to highlight is Last June 14-18 a group I am part of called the Leland Johnson Common Vision Program went to Washington D.C. When we where there we got to meet with Senator Paul Welsone in his office, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee from Texas and President Clinton's advisor regarding race relations. Briefly`describe the weaknesses of Plymouth today. Well to be honest I don't think that there are many weaknesses with Plymouth. However I wish that there wasn't so much speeding on County Road 9, E. Medicine Lake Road and on 36th. I believe that it is not only extremely dangerous for the driver of the speeding vehicle but it puts pedestrians in danger also. Briefly describe Plymouth, as you believe it should be 10 years form now. In ten years I believe that Plymouth will be one of the nation's safest cities. I believe that Plymouth will have tight knit communities who work together to keep the neighborhood safe for all of its citizens. I also invasion communities with young families, clean parks and award winning schools. Plymouth in the year 2010 will be a safe, clean and friendly city for all'. Are there any specific issues'that you feel strongly about that should be discussed by the Youth Advisory Council and/or the Human Rights Commission? I believe that speeding is a big` problem with the teenagers of our city and I feel that some ways to discourage it should be discussed by the Youth Advisory board. Another issue that I feel about strongly about is the still high teenage smoking rate at Armstrong and the surrounding community.
