City of Plymouth joins GreenStep Cities
Plymouth, Minn. – The City of Plymouth has joined the GreenStep City initiative – making Plymouth the
147th city in the state to participate in the voluntary program designed to help cities achieve their
sustainability and quality-of-life goals.
Plymouth City Council adopted a resolution in August to enroll in the free program, which is in alignment
with one of the city’s strategic themes – environmental stewardship.
“Plymouth has long been focused on environmental impact – and we’ve rolled out a number of
community resiliency initiatives over the years,” Plymouth Deputy Public Works Director Chris LaBounty
said. “Officially enrolling in the GreenStep Cities program is a great way for us to formally join other
cities in the state that share similar goals.”
GreenStep Cities is managed by a public-private partnership and features actions tailored to all
Minnesota cities that focus on cost savings and energy use reduction, and encourage civic innovation.
The program was developed by a broad coalition of public and private stakeholders including the League
of Minnesota Cities, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Office of Energy Security and the Clean
Energy Resources Team.
Beginning at Step One
The program features five recognition steps that are achieved through implementing some of the 29
GreenStep best practices, which are categorized into land use, buildings and lighting, transportation,
environmental management, and resilient economic and community development.
As cities adopt best practices, they advance to the next step. Plymouth begins at step one and will work
on goals to climb steps over the course of the coming years.
“Plymouth is already performing a number of these best practices, and this program can help us further
track our progress and share what we are doing with the community,” LaBounty added.
Participating cities have access to GreenStep resources, such as energy tracking, consultations,
webinars, infrastructure advice and more. To learn more, visit greenstep.pca.state.mn.us.

DJR, Joshua/Markum Builders propose
senior condo development in Plymouth
A local development team us proposing a new 21-unit senior condominium building in Plymouth
By Caitlin Anderson-Reporter, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal September 18, 2023
A local development team is proposing a new 21-unit senior condominium
building in the Twin Cities suburb of Plymouth.
The project is being led by Minneapolis-based DJR Architecture Inc. and
developer Anoka-based Joshua/Markum Builders Inc., according to city
documents. The proposal is expected to go before the Plymouth Planning
Commission Wednesday.
The new three-story condo building would be built on a 1.25-acre site that
currently houses a single-family home and two adjacent buildings, which
would be demolished. The site, located at 18035 Old Rockford Road, spans
two lots that would be combined to allow for the new development.

Pickleball is causing a racket in
Minnetonka and Plymouth
By: Kaitlin McCoskey September 19, 2023
Mega Pickle and Pong is open in Minnetonka, with a grand opening planned for Saturday, Oct. 7.

The sport is rapidly growing in popularity in both cities
Arguably one of the fastest growing sports today is pickleball (technically played with a paddle,
excuse the pun above.) For those unfamiliar with the game, its similarity to tennis while
simultaneously offering a slower pace and ease on the body has made it a widely pursued
sport. The pickleball phenomenon is sweeping through cities everywhere, and Plymouth and
Minnetonka are not to be left out.
Plymouth
The pickleball involvement in Plymouth has largely come from several community members
who have made the sport accessible and known to other residents.
Page 11
Lisa Vala shared that she is the co-leader of Pickleball Ambassadors, an organization endorsed
by Plymouth Parks and Recreation to help encourage a welcoming community for Open Play at
Bass Lake Playfields.
According to Vala, three residents in particular “have been instrumental in making Plymouth a
destination for pickleball.” They are Co-Leader Pickeball Ambassador Gretchen Englund,
pickleball skills teacher David Calloway and player safety advocate Gary Schwietzer.
Vala shared first about Englund’s history establishing a pickleball presence in Plymouth and co-
leading pickleball efforts with her.
“[Englund] started a Facebook page for pickleball at Bass Lake Playfields which now has over
500 members,” Vala said. “She welcomes each new person, answers questions and uses the
social media platform to educate folks about rules.”
Of Calloway, Vala said, “[He] has a passion for teaching. Dave
has started ‘skills and drills’ classes for the community. He
purchased balls and a ball machine on his own. He organizes
daily instructional sessions for beginner and intermediate
players. I heard one participant say, ‘If it wasn’t for Dave’s
classes, I would’ve given up on pickleball.’”
Finally, she shared Schwitzer is “driven to ensure safety on
the courts.”
“Specifically, Gary has been relentless in getting Plymouth Parks
and Recreation support to provide an AED (automatic external
defibrillator) on the courts,” Vala said. “Gary has watched two
players experience sudden cardiac arrest while playing who were
saved by AEDs. After months of advocacy, Plymouth Parks and
Recreation will partner with us to write a grant and install an
AED at Bass Lake Playfields next spring.”
Lisa Vala, left, and Gretchen Englund play Vala also explained more about pickleball in Plymouth itself
pickle ball at the Bass Lake courts. and the logistics of its growth.

“Pickleball Open Play is sponsored by the City of Plymouth Parks and Recreation. Ambassadors
are volunteers who are tasked with creating a positive, welcoming environment and educating
attendees of play guidelines during the Open Play times,” she said, adding that those times
include 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, at Bass Lake Playfields. “We worked closely with
Dan Lauer, Plymouth Park & Rec Manager, to develop our Ambassador program.”

“For the past three years, pickleball has been the fastest growing sport in the US. While
originally played primarily by senior citizens, pickleball is expanding in all age groups,” she said.
“In response to high demand, the City of Plymouth has recently added six outdoor pickleball
courts at Zachary Park and eight more courts are planned at The Meadows Park in 2024. For
indoor pickleball in winter months, Open Play is offered at Plymouth Community Center and
Lifetime Fitness.”

Minnetonka
An official pickleball court is opening in Minnetonka in response to the sport’s popularity. Mega
Pickle and Pong opened its newest location Sept. 2 at 17585 MN-7, Minnetonka.
According to Mega co-owner Rick Gray, he and Andrew Ellis opened their first location in
Chanhassen in March 2022.
According to Gray, both of them “wanted to take their love of table tennis and open a facility
for players to come together once they noticed a shortage of indoor opportunities in the
western suburbs.” When Gray’s mother-in-law, an “avid pickleball player herself,” introduced
him to pickleball, he was hooked on the sport as well.
“It only made sense to offer both paddle sports,” he said. “The team soon realized that
expansion was necessary to accommodate the growing sport and Mega community, and they
began exploring second locations. At that time, Ellen Redmond was brought in as co-owner who
shared in the same vision and passion for Mega.”

According to Gray, “Minnetonka was the perfect fit, providing both accessibility and a premiere
space for our players. The build-out began in April 2023.”
He also explained that membership is not required to play at Mega and that the Minnetonka
location will offer lots of amenities to players.
“We offer private court rentals, open play, lessons from the top-rated players in Minnesota,
clinics and leagues. We also have a wonderful space to host private events,” Gray said.
“Whether you are picking up a paddle for the first time or have been playing for years, we have
something for everyone.”
Gray noted that the Chanhassen location features six indoor competition-grade pickleball
courts and table tennis. The Minnetonka location features 10 indoor competition-grade
pickleball courts and will offer food and beverage services beginning this winter, along with an
outdoor patio space next summer.
In addition to opening another likely profitable business to serve the community, Gray
explained that the new Minnetonka location’s opening is extra special because “Mega is the
first independent pickleball club in Minnesota to expand from one location.”
“We take pride in listening to our customers and creating a welcoming community known for
its top-rate pickleball,” he said. “We look forward to being a part of the Minnetonka community
and showing others how fun and inclusive pickleball can be.”

All are welcome to the grand opening of Minnetonka’s Mega location 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 7. The event will feature raffles and food trucks.
