CERT volunteers play a critical role in providing support to fire, police and paramedic services at emergency scenes and disaster sites. They also work proactively to participate in community preparedness planning and provide public education outreach. All CERT members receive a total of 24 hours of initial training. Applicants need not have previous public safety experience. All interested residents are encouraged to apply – CERT volunteers represent a wide range of ages, backgrounds and professions. In addition to completing the CERT volunteer application, successful candidates must live or work in Plymouth, have a high school degree or equivalent, be at least 21 years old, have a valid Minnesota driver’s license and pass a criminal background check. Applications are due Friday, Jan. 31. For more information about CERT and to download an application, visit plymouthmn.gov/CERT. Seats will be open until filled, but preference will be given to applicants who apply by Feb. 3. Residents with an interest in local government, including its structure and operations, are encouraged to submit a letter of interest. The chief judge of the Fourth Judicial District will make appointments. The playground open houses are as follows: Swan Lake Park – 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 West Medicine Lake Park – 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 Residents are invited to attend the open houses to review plans and concepts, as well as vote for their preferred playground. About West Medicine Lake Park One of the larger community parks on the shores of Medicine Lake in Plymouth, West Medicine Lake Park is at 1920 W. Medicine Lake Drive. The park features a beach, boat launch, basketball court, bike rack, grills, picnic shelter, playground, sand volleyball court, walking trails and more. About Swan Lake Park A smaller neighborhood park in northeast Plymouth, Swan Lake Park is at 4480 Quinwood Lane N. The park features a basketball court, playground, walking trails that loop around Swan Lake and more. Fire & Ice attractions include: Hayrides Food trucks Pony and sled-dog rides Recycling bin races Miniature golf on the ice Snow bowling and ice games Box hockey Ice skating Youth ice fishing contest Sledding Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing Bonfire Character appearances, featuring Ana, Elsa and Olaf, as well as the TC Bear SKOL Drumline Magician Fireworks All activities are weather permitting. To combat the cold, attendees can warm up at a bonfire with s’mores and hot chocolate, while supplies last, sponsored by Step by Step Montessori. Attendees should bring cash for food trucks. The finale of the event – fireworks sponsored by the Plymouth Civic League – will begin around 6:30 p.m. New: Coloring Contest Children are invited to participate in a coloring contest in advance of Fire & Ice. Entries are due Friday, Jan. 24 – and winning entries will be judged and announced during Fire & Ice. Contestants will be judged in four age categories. The coloring contest sheet can be downloaded from the City of Plymouth website, plymouthmn.gov. All entries must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. Coloring Contest Judging, Winners & Prizes Finalists will be notified Tuesday, Jan. 28. Coloring contest judging, and announcement of winners, will be held during Fire & Ice – at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 on the Showmobile Stage. The final winner in each category will receive a $30 Target gift card. The runner-up in each category will receive a $15 Target gift card. Medallion Hunt The 10th-annual medallion hunt begins Thursday, Jan. 9 with a clue on plymouthmn.gov and the city’s social media platforms. More clues will be published Thursdays, Jan. 16, 23 and 30, or until someone finds the medallion. There is no need to register or pay to participate. A $250 prize will be awarded to the first sleuth who finds the medallion. Only Plymouth residents are eligible. For more clues and more information, visit plymouthmn.gov. New: Fire & Ice Scavenger Hunt Also new this year, Fire & Ice will feature a scavenger hunt during the event. Attendees can stop by the Showmobile stage to pick up scavenger hunt cards and collect stamps at a variety of activities during the event. Completed stamp cards should be returned to the stage area by 5:45 p.m. Completed cards will be entered into a drawing and winners will be awarded gift cards. Shuttle Service Free shuttles to and from the event will run from 3:30-7:30 p.m. at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church, 17205 County Road 6, and Parkers Lake Baptist Church, 14720 County Road 6. More Information Fire & Ice is free, aside from food trucks, and open to the public.
