On May 5th, 1997, teens and adult
volunteers came together in a garage in
Plymouth to start a very special project ā the
Boat Project. These pictures capture some
of the moments shared by this industrious
group as they worked toward completion of
two beautiful new boats. The boats
however, were not the only thing built
during these past few months. Both teens
and adults have built self-confidence, new
skills, friendships, and a better understanding
of themselves and each other.
Welcome to our "scrapbook."
Getting started
The boat builders start construction of
the frames upon which the hulls will
take shape.
Putting it all together
Many wood screws are required to assemble
the hull. Cordless drills and screwdriver bits
make a tough job easier.

Righting the hull
S» _ After the sides and bottom are joined,
the hull is "righted" so that work can
continue on the inside. Seats and
bulkheads go in next.
Interviews
Midway through the project, the builders are
interviewed to find out what they like and how
the project is going.
and yet more
sanding
An adult volunteer tries his hand at the
sanding job.
Priming and painting
Paint means we're getting near the end.
The builders have decided that
Whispering Jewel will be green and
Purple Haze will be... purple, of course.
It's Time to Celebrate!
At last! All hands on deck. The big event is about
to occur. Purple Haze and Whispering Jewel have
passed their water trials with flying colors and it's
time for the official launching ceremony.
Boat Launch and Big Race

12 youths (ages 11 to 17) from Plymouth apartments participated in "The Boat Project"
which began the end of May 1997. The teens met twice weekly and worked from 5 PM to 8 PM
on the boats. The youths learned skills ranging from math to carpentry, and built strong
relationships with the adult volunteers who worked along side the teens.
The project was funded by the Honeywell Foundation. Several other organizations
contributed to this project. Cargill Financial Marketing Group donated a 1997 van to CONECT,
that van transported the youths tolfrom the worksite; Urban Boat Builders, St. Paul provided
leadership, ordered and organized the building material; The City of Plymouth provided the
workshop site; Plymouth Park and Recreation identified and organized the volunteers; Justus
Lumber in Hopkins donated tools, and Ridgedale YMCA, Communities in Collaboration
Council, CONECT & Honeywell provided scholarship money for several of the teens to attend
YMCA camp upon completion of the project.
What is The CONECT Collaborative?
CONECT is an Ambassador of Good Will providing a platform for Plymouth Citizens,
Businesses, Schools, Clubs & Organizations to strengthen:
Community, Compassion and Concern
for & among all residents of Plymouth & the surrounding communities.
CONECT creates 'nurturing neighborhood' environments by bringing Community Resources
and Services directly to Plymouth multi -unit apartment complexes. Desired resources and
services are therefore easily accessible to apartment residents. CONECT is presently offering
this program in two Plymouth apartment complexes & has future expansion plans.
