Cub Foods expands 24-hour service, hires
1,000 employees
Cub foods is adding 24-hour service to 11 stores in an effort to expand social distancing.

Cub Foods is adding 24-hour service at 11 stores to expand social distancing options and
provide flexibility to first responders and front-line medical staff who work varied shifts,
The extended hour openings will be staggered, but once complete 24 Cub locations will
be open all day and night, according to an announcement on Monday. Locations in
Apple Valley, on Lyndale Avenue in Bloomington and Plymouth changed their hours last
week. Sunday, Bloomington Valley West, Eden Prairie, Knollwood St. Louis Park,
Quarry in Minneapolis, West St. Paul and Woodbury will be added. Brooklyn Park
North and St. Anthony stores will begin extended hours May 3.
"Consumers expect grocery stores to be there for them and in times of a natural disaster,
we're the last to close and the first to open. That's a responsibility we take seriously and
Page 9
that's why our work is essential now," said Cub CEO Mike Stigers in the release. "Cub is
here to serve our communities, and we'll continue doing so as we have for over 50
years."
Cub pharmacies in Maple Grove and St. Paul Midway are now open 24 hours as well.
To facilitate the expansion Cub is hiring 1,000 employees by the end of April. Full and
part-time position opportunities include assistant store directors, pharmacy technicians,
staff for the deli, meat, and bakery departments, cashiers, stockers and clean team.
The move runs counter to grocery trends of the past year. West Des Moines, Iowa-based
Hy-Vee Inc. ended its 24-hour schedule at most of its stores in February, due to rising
labor costs. Albertsons, Wegmans and some Walmart stores have also cut back hours at
some or all locations (though Walmart still has 24-hour stores in Minnesota.)
Cub Foods is owned by United Natural Foods Inc. of Providence, R.I.

Commentary: True privilege to have served you
By Laurie Hartmann Apr 23, 2020
We have appreciated the long-time support shown by residents and businesses in the city of Eden
Prairie and communities surrounding Lake Minnetonka. We developed many partnerships over
the years with our loyal advertisers and readers who turned to us as their primary source for local
news and information.
Changes within our communities have always been documented by our news products, and
we’ve seen our share of it within the media industry, particularly in recent years. We, too, have
experienced a decline in advertising revenue, changes in marketing preferences, and now, the
impact on local business, including our newspapers, from COVID-19.
We have made the difficult decision to cease publishing the Eden Prairie News and Lakeshore
Weekly News. Our final edition will be mailed to our requesters on April 30.
Publishing of weekly newspapers in Chanhassen, Chaska, Shakopee, Jordan, Prior Lake and
Savage will continue, and area content will be updated regularly on our website,
swnewsmedia.com.
Our sincere thanks is extended to staff members — past and present — who produced great news
products and helped local advertisers grow their business. It’s been a true privilege to have
served you.
Laurie Hartmann is general manager of the Lakeshore Weekly News and Eden Prairie News.
