HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 1974-076CITY OF PLYMOUTH Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Plymouth, Minnesota, was held on the 4th day of February, 1974. The following members were present: Mayor Hilde, Councilmen Neils, Seibold and Hunt. The following members were absent: Councilman Spaeth. Mayor Hilde introduced the following Resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. 74-76 ELECTED METROPOLITAN COUNCIL WHEREAS, the right of citizens to elect representatives of their choice to positions of public trust and responsibility has been the keysto:._ f our republic for nearly two centuries, and WHEREAS, the members of the Metropolitan Council are presently appointed to their positions by the Governor, and WHEREAS, the responsibility for guiding the future of our metro- politan area cannot be properly achieved by appointive persons who are not directly accountable to the electorate for their actions, and WHEREAS, a Metropolitan Council composed of members elected by . citizens of the metropolitan area would bring both accountability and responsiveness to the Council in the tradition of our republic, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLYMOUTH that this Council urges the members of the State Legis- lature to promptly adopt legislation which would provide for an elected Metropolitan Council in order that the citizens of the metropolitan area might be able to bring a full measure of accountability to those whose actions have such a direct and vital impact upon their lives, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to the Governor, all members of the Legislature from the Metropolitan Area, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Metropolitan and Urban Affairs, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Metropolitan and Urban Affairs. The motion for the adoption of the foregoing Resolution was duly seconded by Councilman Hunt, and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Mayor Hilde, Councilmen Neils, Seibold and Hunt. The following voted against or abstained: None. Whereupon the Resolution was declared duly passed and adopted. ,tyrar 0
